The Harmony Project, BREAD and “Imam” Hany Saqr

The Harmony Project of Columbus has chosen Dr. Hany Saqr as a representative of the Muslim community of central Ohio. He will represent the community in an upcoming event “Hope for the Holidays: A partnership of faith benefitting Mid-Ohio Food Bank.”

Although it is a great initiative for a great cause, the choice of community’s representative must also be made with great care. Events like these are like king makers. The organizers must always make sure that they choose right and genuine people with good reputation and sound legal and ethical backgrounds.

The choice of “Imam” Hany Saqr as a representative of Muslim community in this event is highly questionable and disturbing to many Muslims.  Out of about 70,000 Muslims in greater Columbus area, the Harmony Project has selected the most disputed person of a community as its representative.  Dr. Saqr is not only disputed as an imam in this community, but he is also dealing with a lawsuit filed against him by a community member for misrepresentation in a business deal (case # 10 CV 007164).  Due to his legal baggage and past associations, he has become a liability to this community.

In fact, there are several misconceptions and misinformation about Dr. Hany Saqr and Noor Islamic Cultural Center within the Columbus interfaith community, and they need to be clarified. This write up intends to address some of them.

Misconception # 1:
Dr. Hany Saqr is an Islamic Scholar .

Fact: Dr. Saqr has not gone to any religious school and has no formal degree in Islamic theology or Fiqh (Islamic law). He has a basic medical degree with a PhD in Pathology.

Misconception # 2:
Dr. Hany Saqr is the most influential “Imam” (religious leader) in the central Ohio’s Muslim Community.

Fact: Dr. Saqr is the only “disputed imam” in this community. Several Muslim community leaders have recorded their distrust in his leadership. Their comments and statements can be seen here and here.  He has publically lied on several occasions and has sworn on Quran and then did not fulfill his promises. Due to this reason, several community members, including myself, believe that he should not be leading prayers  anymore. We step outside the congregation, whenever we see him leading a prayer or at the pulpit .

Misconception # 3: Dr. Saqr is chairman or president of Noor Islamic Cultural Center located at Wilcox Rd, Dublin, Ohio.

Fact:  The property of Noor Islamic Cultural Center at Wilcox Rd. is owned by a private trust called American Islamic Waqf (AIW). Dr. Saqr was forced to resign from the chairmanship of AIW after several proofs of violations of organization’s bylaws and mismanagement of funds and operations.  In the midst of the dispute, on August 29, 2009, he registered a new organization “Noor Islamic Cultural Center”  under his name and home address. According to the secretary of state’s website, it has no member other than himself.  Currently he serves as a board member of AIW. Several community members and leaders have publicly recorded their protest to his position in the board.

This is also important to note that AIW has never been a member organization, and that Saqr was never elected by community members to any position whatsoever.

In short, Dr. Saqr is not an agreed upon and respected leader of Columbus Muslim Community. If he represents Muslim community in the Hope for Holidays event, he will be the only winner. Both Muslim community and Project Harmony will lose. He will legitimize himself by standing next to Rabbi Harold Berman, Rev. Timothy Ahrens and Rev. Dr. Susan Smith on the stage provided by the Harmony Project. Whereas, the project will lose its credibility of presenting the genuine leaders only; and the Muslim community will be once again stuck with a forced upon corrupted leader as its representative.

It’s about time for central Ohio’s interfaith community to educate themselves. They need to reach beyond Dr. Saqr. There are several Muslim activists volunteering in various community and interfaith projects, it won’t be hard to find right Muslim guest and speaker for any program, let alone a charity concert.

If it is about community service and taking care of needy families, I would suggest any of the following:

•    Mubushra Shaheen, who has been tirelessly organizing “Feed the Needy Events” on monthly basis for several years.
•     Dr. Malka Haque, who has been putting immense effort in running free Noor Clinic for needy people in the community.
•    Anas Deifallah, who has been taking care of torn refugee families, orphans  and battered sisters through the platform of Muslim Family Services for years.

If it is about the religious leadership and speaking skills, we have several well reputed and well received imams and speakers including Br. Alauddin Alauddin, Br. Abukar Arman, Dr. M.N. Tarazi, and Br. John Kashubeck among us.

I hope that the Harmony Project will take heed and will do the right thing at this point. If there is a will; there is a way.  And, it’s never too late to correct any mistake.

Dr. Hany Saqr becomes Vice President of BREAD
Update on November 17, 2010:

Within the hours of posting this post on November 15, I was contacted by few interfaith leaders in the community, who informed me that Dr. Saqr’s was about to be elected as a Vice President of BREAD (Building Responsibility, Equity and Dignity) that evening. BREAD is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic social justice organization comprised of over 50 different religious denominations in the city of Columbus.

They were shocked to learn about Saqr’s details in my writing and through the links provided in this post.  His nomination for VP post was based on the above-mentioned misconceptions about him and lack of any vetting by BREAD’s officials. Since it was too late, they were not able to take him off the roster that night. He brought five adults and three children with him to represent Noor community. Of course, none of them objected about his nomination. Hence, he became the first Muslim Vice President of BREAD.

My advice to BREAD is the same as it is to the Harmony Project. I hope and pray that the BREAD will also take heed and will do the right thing from this point on.  If it does not, according to its by-laws, this man will become the organization’s president next year.  The officials and members of BREAD should be smart enough to sort and straight this out before then for the sake of their organization and the reputations of other ministers, leaders and member organizations.

  1. Honey has a Phd in self-promotion and lack of humility. I am surprised the 'greatest Imam' in the US of A has still not been appointed as the Leader of the Muslims in Ohio.

  3. Masha-Allah #1 elder with thirty years experience as Muslim community leader to represent us at BREAD. I don't agree with this haughty article against such an elder.

  4. Aisha,
If you agree that a liar represents you then fine. I don't think you visited link # 7 above to hear him in his own voice lying about how much he was making at Noor Center in front of 120 people.

  5. Abdullah: Do you have any proof that Hany did in fact make $30K or whatever amount the youtube video is claiming?

  6. To the previous commenter

Very simple ask Br. Mohammad Arif, the current Treasurer of NICC (mohammad1954@yahoo.com) and he will confirm that Hany was making $2,500 / month at that time.

  7. Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Baraktu,

As a fellow Muslim, I am condoning such rhetoric against another Muslim brother based on the fact that this causes fitnah not only in the Muslim Community but also puts forth a bad name for Dr. Hany Saqr in the non-Muslim community. I understand Zerqa you have bad taste for Dr. Hany, but that in no way gives you any right to publicly humiliate someone who has a family and is well known. May Allah forgive you and guide you insha'Allah.

  8. I agree with the person above! Also, If Dr. Saqr was making $30,000 a year, I am ashamed! He should have made at least $75,000 a year to run an Islamic organization. We as a community are so petty it is sad.

  9. Aisha,

The question is not whether he should have made $75,000 or even more. The question is why did he lie publically about how much he was making. You are missing the point. Why don't you ask him to clarify this.
Does it matter if an Imam lies?

  10. Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu,

dear anonymous, ameen to your dua.

Several times on this forum I and several others have clarified in comments of previous posts about NICC and Hany Saqr that according to Islamic law, criticizing any ameer (leader) publicly and bringing forward his corruption, lying, mismanagement, etc., is not a crime or sin, instead it is a mandatory civic duty.

We have also discussed "Fitnah" at length. You may read my post "Aasiya Zubair's Call: Blow the Whistle Harder" in this regard. Dr. Tarazi also have a post on this topic at http://centralohiomuslimnews.blogspot.com/2010/05/fitnah-oft-used-misused-word.html

It's not about my good or bad taste about Dr. Saqr, it's about what are the facts and what is right in the light of those facts.

As far as non-Muslim/interfaith community is concerned, I rather have no representation from the Muslim community than having a corrupt one. A wrong, incompetent leadership may bring more harm than no leadership at all. It may also close the doors for future opportunities as well.

Just last year, we dealt with a case like that on national level. Remember Muzzammil Hassan of Bridges TV who brought so much shame and harm to the American Muslim community just because he was earlier celebrated as a hero and was in the spotlight. Please read my post "Did we ever bother to know Muzzammil" for more info on this.

My dear fellow Muslim, it's about time for us, the Muslim community, that WE clean our mess and reject corrupt leaders before our non-Muslim friends get hurt because of us. Let's do it together. Let's do it sooner than later.

May Allah SWT forgive and guide us all, ameen.

  11. Following is an excerpt from Dr. Tarazi's article about Fitnah:

As this Noor Saga continues to unfold, have you discharged your duty to Allah (S.W.T)? If at the end, God forbid, something terrible happens to Masjid Al-Noor, then what are you going to respond to Allah when asked, "What have you done to help during this trial?"

"It was a fitnah so I stayed away from it! I didn't want to hurt the feelings of my brothers! I was afraid to be accused of adding fuel to the fire! I did not want to be called fitnah creator. I wanted to be neutral! Madakhalny (none of my business)."

Allah (S.W.T) said: "And fear fitnatan (the trial) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong: And know that Allah Is Strict in punishment." (al-Anfal 8:25).

So why is it that the punishment extends to those who did not do wrong? It is partly that those who do wrong hurt others. But for many responsible people among them, it is also because they did not discharge their duty to Allah (S.W.T).

Please read full article at the following link:

    http://centralohiomuslimnews.blogspot.com/2010/05/fitnah-oft-used-misused-word.html

It's has in depth analysis of word Fitnah in Quran and its implication on our situation regarding Dr. Saqr and Noor's case.

wa ma alaina illal bilagh. And there is nothing upon us besides conveying the message.

    wassalam.

  12. I think, we as a Muslim community of central Ohio in general and as an AIW donor in particular should focus on the following points before we goes into who is presenting us in non-Muslims organizations. Majority of non-Muslims organization don’t care who is representing who in there board, all they care is number and fund. So we should not focus on that, it is their responsibility to do a background check.

    1. Current handpicked board had the mandate to establish new by-laws in 6 months.Hold the election and hand over the responsibilities to elected members. That was in May 2010 and we’re in last week of November and there are no by-laws yet.

    2. Br. Hany publically announced that if Br. Khaled resigns he will resign too. Well what I say on that?

    3. Many current handpicked board members and other active community members were assuring the community that, Br. Hany will be sideline, I laugh at it that day and I’ll still laughing on their knowledge and wishful thinking. In fact what I’m seeing is many of new handpicked board members are being sideline, do we need to guess by whom?

    4. NICC is still Br. Hany’s personal property. When will this issue be resolved?

    5. AIW is not a member organization why their representative claims it when they are in other organization meeting/stage?

  13. Some people are under the impression that Hany has resigned from Noor Board. Someone please confirm if he has or has not resigned.

Truth is always a blessing even when it seems like fitna. False peace based on untruth is never good. Praise be to Allah SWT.
