Dear friend,
It is with sadness that I acknowledge that the Democratic Party is very likely to be completely and soundly trounced in the November 2nd fall elections.
Why do I think, just as do virtually all of the political pundits, that this terrible fate awaits the political party to which I belong? Because the majority of Americans appear to have decided that the Democratic Party, more than the Republican Party, works for "other people" more than it does for the majority of Americans; namely, the Democratic Party works for the "other" -- for the immigrants, for minorities of all sorts, for the poor, for the Islamics and for foreigners generally, for people who do not have health care insurance, for people who are not American citizens, for those who are not the achievers within the American society, for the "other" within our society.
In a summary word, the majority of Americans appear to see themselves as hard working achievers, while they see all of these "others" as "the other," not deserving of any special attention of the government. In short, this vast majority of Americans will be voting in their own perceived best interest -- voting for themselves and against foreigners, for themselves and against those who do not have health care insurance, for themselves and against those who want to change our environmental standards, for themselves and against anyone who wants a
"bailout" for any purpose, for themselves and against Muslims, for themselves and against gays, lesbians, and the transgendered, for themselves to TAKE THEIR COUNTY BACK FROM THESE "OTHERS!"
... Most alarming is the prospect that this fight against "the other" may continue and endure for some time to come. As a minority in many, many different respects, I am this "other" the American majority is fighting against. I am the "other" from which the country is being taken.
With Some Fear and Trembling,
Earl

By the time I finished reading his email, I realized that his words actually fit many of us. They fit me.
I am: a Muslim, an immigrant, a small business owner, and a middle class American. In Earl’s words, “I am this ‘other’ the American majority is fighting against.”
Here, the question arises: Is it really American majority that is fighting against me or is it just a bunch of loud mouth Tea Partiers who are confusing everyone else?
I think, it's mostly Tea Partiers, but calling them "just a bunch of Tea Partiers" would be a criminal under estimating. Their threat is real.
The whole America is facing this serious threat this fall. No matter how much ignorant, careless or fearless we would like to be in this regard, this needs addressing right away.
CNN analyst Roland Martin recently addressed this in his article, “Democrats had better fear Tea Party candidates.” He notes that the Tea Party Movement in recent primaries in several states has already proven its power and is shaking the GOP. In Delaware, he says, “Christine O'Donnell's victory this week over the legendary Mike Castle, a congressman, former governor and the man considered absolutely unbeatable” should be a serious point to note for Democrats. “In the New York Republican gubernatorial race, Rick Lazio was also considered a shoo-in to face New York Attorney General Mario Cuomo in November, yet a Tea Partier with a racist streak in his body, Carl Paladino, beat the former congressman. Badly.”
Although many political pundits are suggesting this as a sign of confirmed win for Democrats in many races, I think it could be unlikely. According to my observation as a political community organizer, voters other than Tea Partiers are either laid back or have given up. Many of us who were very involved in 2008 elections are not even talking about the elections or candidates yet.
In Columbus Muslim community, for example, I have not heard any discussion about upcoming elections and who are we voting for. So far, no programs have been organized to inform and educate the Muslim voters about the candidates. Neither MPAC nor CAIR has organized any event in this regard. And we are only 44 days away from the election.
Here, we are talking about Ohio, a swing state, where Congress woman Mary Jo Kilroy won her 2008 elections with only 2,311 votes. This is going to be a tough race again this year. In the absence of Obama’s 2008 charisma, this needs way more activism than the last time.
Similarly, according to a Quinnipiac University poll of likely voters released on September 16, “Republican challenger John Kasich has a 54 - 37 percent lead over Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in the race to be Ohio's next chief state executive, with much of his lead due to overwhelming support among independent voters.”
A 17-point lead is nothing but a wakeup call for us. The situation is really bad. Ignoring these numbers and doing nothing about it is even worst.
In central Ohio, the loss of Kilroy, Strickland and many other democrats, God forbidding, would actually be a greater loss for Muslim Community than any other minority. In the current environment, Democrats are the only people who have supported us without any reservations. Although they are not perfect, when it comes to bigotry and Islamophobia, democrats have stood up clearly in support of Muslims and have defended Islam. Keeping them in their offices is nothing less than a must for American Muslims.
This calls for all kind of community mobilization in next 44 days. Having fundraisers and donating money to the races is very important; but the most important is the call to get out and vote (GOTV). At the end it’s the vote count that decides who goes to the office. We must launch a state of political emergency within our communities. Educating our communities about the candidates and encouraging them to vote would be the first step, but taking them to the poll would actually be the king maker.
My friends, it’s time to reach “others” and work together for a better tomorrow. It’s time to send all racists, bigots, fear and hate mongers home. This cannot be done without American Muslims.
Please join the movement by sending an email to zabid@ohiomuslims.org.
God bless you. God bless America.
Earl's analysis is enough to scare daylights out of the 90% of Muslims who support the Democratic Party (and will warm the hearts of the 10% 'photo-op Republican' Muslims who ask for nothing in return for their ungodly campaign contributions to the Republican candidates except for an opportunity to secure for their grand-children a picture of themselves with the bigots who snatched senatorship or governorship away from Democratic rival); to which I can only say, let not one Muslim vote (a vote that would go to the democrat, that is) be wasted. And never mind if the state you live in is red or blue and the democrat you support is a shoe-in or does not have a prayer against his or her bigoted Tea Party Republican rival.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really a wake up call. Nothing is impossible, tables can still be turned.
ReplyDeleteI don't think, there is any need to be scared. But we should take it very seriously and do whatever is needed to take our people to the polls. After all it's the vote count that decides the victory.

Being loyal to a political party is closing your eyes to the truth of what is going on in this country. Corporate interests control our government, and there is no candidate that can stand up to them. Obama is proof. What "change" has he made that lives up to the lofty promises he made? He gives constitutional, trillion dollar handouts to the financial industry and turns his back on those who really need it. Democrats are in complete control of government, so he has no excuses.
ReplyDeleteAsk yourself this. Are Muslims truly better off with the Democrats in power? Isn't Islamophobia at an all time high right now? I don't get it. How are the Democrats helping us? They just seem to be making people more angry and that anger is being directed towards us.
The problem with all of us is that we think we can change the country because it is a so called democracy. This is a fallacy.
Read this article by Chris Hedges. I'm sure it will seem controversial, but maybe it will open some eyes.

Above should read "unconstitutional, trillion dollar handouts." Sorry for the typo.
ReplyDeleteDear anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI find your comment very interesting in many ways.
#1 You have posted this as anonymous. You dared not to come in front with your original name. This shows your character and sincerity in this very important matter that not only concerns our community but this whole nation.
#2 You say "Being loyal to a political party is closing your eyes to the truth of what is going on in this country." If you would have just read my earlier posts "Ohioans do not gamble on their kids" and "Kilroy did it again!" you would know how much blind or not blind I am.
#3 As a typical Republican, you have blamed everything on Obama while wrapping complicated issues into your two sentences. Each one is debatable but to cut it in short, I would like to remind you that whatever is happening in this country and whatever we are dealing with is the aftermath of Republican era. Obama is cleaning 8 years mess and it would take some time. And NO, Democrats are not in complete control of government. Otherwise, it would not take as much time in getting every single bill passed as it is taking for last two years.
# 4 As far as my loyalty is concerned; I am loyal to my community and my country. To me, being loyal means saying the right thing on right time. It means calling wrong as wrong. No matter what price you have to pay for that. Just this blog is enough witness to show where I stand on issues and personalities when it comes to be beneficial or harmful to my people.
I do not approve Obama, Strickland, Kilroy or any other democrat for every single thing they do. I know, just like Republicans, they have done many things wrong and that they may make more mistakes in future. But what separates them from the Republicans is their attitude toward me. How they include me. How they respect me as a Muslim woman. How they stand for Muslim community.
I have a question for you. Suppose you have two brothers. One seems like a well groomed seasoned professional who can handle every job. When he gets opportunity, he messes up things upside down. Under his supervision, profit becomes loss and prosperity is being replaced by poverty, friends become enemies, etc., etc. On top, he treats you like dirt. He insults you in public and in privacy. He sits with your enemies and does everything that may hurt you in anyway. Your second brother does not look so perfect. Yet he always clears the mess of first brother. Every time economy goes down, he takes care of it and brings the family back to the track of prosperity. He mediates with enemies and makes them friends again, etc., etc. On top, he treats you with dignity and respect and he stands up for you whenever you need it. Which one is better for you? Unless you are first brother or you are insane, you better choose second brother and just stick with him.

ReplyDelete#5 You say: "Are Muslims truly better off with the Democrats in power? Isn't Islamophobia at an all time high right now? I don't get it."
You are right: You don't get it. Muslims are way better off with Democrats in power. Just simply check how Obama's orders have influenced and stopped so many discriminative practices in INS that were imposed by Bush after 9/11. There are tons of other examples. Has everything changed? No. It may never will. But the blame does not go solely to Democrats or Obama, there are multiple other reasons and layers to every issue and policy. Simplistic conclusions and accusations like yours do not take us anywhere. Nor does leaving them alone to do whatever they want.
What is interesting to me is that you accuse democrats for having more Islamophobia in their era, but you do not accuse Republicans and Tea Partiers who are Islamophobes, bigots and racists. That actually shows your state of mind.
#6 You say: "The problem with all of us is that we think we can change the country because it is a so called democracy. This is a fallacy."
My dear friend, this is not a fallacy; this is the reality of our life. According to the law of our land, people are the agents of change. This is not only our civic duty to do our job as citizens, but it is also our Islamic duty to actively participate in the governmental affairs per our capacity. No democrats or Republicans can be left alone to decide on our behalf. No wise Muslim would go and make coalition with Islamophobes and bigots. It's one clear message that we need to send out loud and clear this election.
And Allah knows the best.
Gallup Poll - An interesting article to read:
ReplyDeleteMuslims Give Obama Highest Job Approval; Mormons, Lowest
by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- Muslim Americans continue to give President Barack Obama the highest job approval rating of any major religious group in the U.S., while Mormons give the president the lowest ratings.

I grew up in a family of Republicans and always thought of myself as a moderate Republican, concerned about individuals being responsible for their actions and taking risks, but also willing to help those less fortunate and those in need. But I see today Republicans as thoughtless and arrogant and playing games with hate and lies to gain power and wealth.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats have their faults, certainly, but Republicans have increased the gap between the wealthy and the rest of the country and their policies have been sending more and more of the middle class down into poverty. Robin Blumner summarized an article by Timothy Noah in a column in today's Dispatch, http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/editorials/stories/2010/09/20/class-warfare-rages-on-without-end.html?sid=101
